Il 31 gennaio 2011 sono di scena le altre due quinte: 5°B e 5°C. Anche per loro il compito di preparare materiale per la piccola fauna. Il risultato è da considerarsi qualcosa a cavallo tra scienza e Pop Art: il limite tra i due ambiti è a volte sottile. Ognuno ci mette del suo, interpretando in maniera personale le disposizioni date. Risultato: un centone di stili e tecniche, roba che neanche le vecchie soffitte.
Qualcuno, in ogni caso, ha applicato le disposizioni della Bibbia, ovvero quanto descritto qualche articolo fa in questo blog.

Science and Pop Art: the boundary in between is sometimes really thin. Nests and nest boxes made by the two classes that were in the field on 31st January 2011 display a mixture of styles.
Someone did it applying the Bible i.e. criteria and rules outlined a couple of posts back in this blog. That is to say what nest boxes for insects should look like.

Ben fatto! I buchi non hanno tutti le stesse dimensioni: in questo modo, l’impianto può ospitare specie diverse. I blocchi di legno sono appesi con il lato sforacchiato esposto verso sud: i possibili nidi godranno così di calore. Sarà anche necessario piazzare una piccola tettoia in cima: l’acqua piovana non deve entrare nei buchi.

Brilliant! As stated in a previous post, the holes are not the same size. Different species will use different ones to lay their eggs. We hope so. The two small wood blocks were hung facing south, exposed to the Sun. They need a small roof on the top, for the rain may damage eggs.

Tutti i manufatti vengono posti all’interno della recinzione: il malintenzionato e il teppista sono sempre in agguato.

All boxes and so on have been placed inside the fence: hooliganism is always round the corner.

Non siamo soli. Luigi D e GaeNava sono della partita: il secondo scatta diverse istantanee, per la gioia del blog.

We were not alone: Luigi D and GaeNava were waiting for us. As usual, the latter got snapshots.

Mica basta. Tutte le strutture andranno protette: ci penseremo, ci penseremo. Nel frattempo una lamiera recuperata dai nostri prodi fa da supporto a molti manufatti (vedi sotto): sufficiente ad evitare il deleterio contatto con il terreno. La gran parte dei nidi artificiali è posta vicino ad un muro del gabbiotto: il tutto potrà godere di un minimo di riparo, oltre che di calore irradiato dall’edificio.

Our efforts will need something more: every box is to be properly sheltered. A roof or something like that will be erected. For this very beginning, a plate will do (see below), just to keep them slightly over the ground. Most boxes have been placed near the wall, to provide them with shelter and heat.

And now, a short dip into Pop Art.

E ora, un piccolo tuffo nella Pop Art.

Chi ci abiterà? …chiocciole, limacce e compagnia…. “…e il piccolo cesto…?” Qualche alunno dice che è stato concepito per gli uccelli. Hmmmmm: alquanto estemporaneo. Meglio considerarlo come un esperimento: chissà quali piccoli animali ne approfitteranno.

Who will inhabit it? “…snails, slugs and so on…. “…and the small basket…?” Some pupil said it was designed for birds. Sounds funny (peculiar). Better to regard it as an experiment.

E questo? Servirà, servirà....

What about this? It will help some animals.

C'è anche qualche manufatto dal taglio esoterico. Il triangolo è per ragni.

Under a tree, we placed a masterpiece. A hut for hedgehogs. Well done, boys!

E infine....

Un'alunna di Agrate ha controllato il blog l'altro ieri. "Perhè non ci sono foto dei nostri lavori?".
Piccola peste insolente! Come osi? A proposito, trovo bellissimo che il blog sia visitato dai nostri fanciulli. Chi altri frequenta queste pagine? In qualche modo è ancora un mistero. Luigi D dice che il 10% delle visite, dall'ottobre 2010, ha luogo nella Rep. Ceca. "Continua con la formula bilingue", chiede il nostro. Sarà fatto.

A pupil from Agrate checked this blog the day before yesterday. “No pictures of our boxes in it. Why?" She asked. You brat! How dare you? By the way, I do find really great that this blog is visited by our boys and girls. Who else usually has a look to these pages? Someway, it is still a mystery. Luigi D emailed that 10% of visits have been from Czech Republic since last October.
“So keep writing texts in English”, stated Luigi. I will.

28 gennaio 2011 - La 5°D torna in azione January 28th 2011 5°D back in action

È il 28 gennaio 2011, la 5°D di Agrate torna in azione. Prima dell’incontro, gli alunni hanno realizzato diverse cassette nido per insetti e rifugi per ricci. Questi ultimi risultano i più gettonati.
Alcuni esempi……..

January 28th 2011, the class 5°D are back. They built so many nest-boxes for insects and hedgehogs. The latter are at the top: the pupils like them best.

.....e problemi

Qualche cassetta è troppo piccola per i ricci, e viene trasformata in nido per bombi: basta chiuderla e piazzare un tubo di ingresso delle dimensioni giuste (vedi foto qui sotto).

Some boxes were a little bit small for hedgehogs so that they turned into nests for bumblebees. Not so difficult: we closed the boxes adding a properly sized tube, (see the following pictures).

In ogni caso, come facciamo ad installare cassette fatte di carta e cartone? Chiamo Luigi D., un uomo per tutte le stagioni. Il suo apporto sarà prontamente a disposizione: ci accordiamo per erigere un tetto per proteggere i lavori, preziosi, degli alunni.

Quest’anno, abbiamo due obbiettivi principali: non solo dare una casa a piccoli animali, ma realizzare anche dei testi informativi per i visitatori. Questi ultimi saranno posti, a mo’ di libro, su un tavolino. Ogni classe un diverso tema:
- Attività e divieti. Cosa posso fare e trovare quando vengo alla Volano? E come? Devo però anche rispettare dei divieti.
- Il progetto. Una storia del luogo e del lavoro di Luigi Villa.
- Cinque anni alla Volano. Una illustrazione dei lavori che le classi hanno svolto in questi anni.
La 5°D ha scelto il primo argomento. Divisi in tre gruppi, stendono testi e disegnano marchi e cartelli di avviso. Si tratta di primi abbozzi.

Anyway, how can we place our nests, made of paper and cardboard in the open? I called Luigi D., a man for all the seasons. His help will do: a roof will be erected in the area in order to protect our nest boxes.

This year, we have two main purposes: not only to give small animals a house but to write down notice boards for visitors. They will not be placed on signs but on a table, like pages of a book. One class, one topic. We suggested three subjects:
- Activities and warnings. What can I do, when visiting Vasca Volano? What can I see and find? And how? Moreover, pupils will write warning notices.
- The project. A history of the site, and a history of the project of Luigi Villa.
- Five years at Vasca Volano. Reports about what we have been doing for five years.

The 5°D class choose the first one. Split in three groups, they wrote some texts and draw logos and warning sings. Just first notes and sketches.

In the end, we place some nest boxes in the garden: they are too many for a small area like Vasca Volano.
